Biden Administration Removes Limit on Student Visas

The Biden administration has formally withdrawn a rule proposed by the previous Trump administration that would have limited student visas (F, M) to 2- and 4-year durations, regardless of the educational program length. International students will now no longer have to worry; they will be able to stay in the U.S. for as long as they are engaged in study programs, otherwise known as “duration of status”.

The formal notice on withdrawing this rule was announced on the Federal Register on July 6. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said they received more than 32,000 public comments during the 30-day comment period when the rule was proposed. Out of these comments, 99% opposed the rule which would limit durations, and potentially force students to leave the U.S. before they had finished their study programs.
