Ban of New Entries to Japan from 11/30: A Reversal of Loosened Entry Restrictions

Hello, this is Yuka of IMS. A week ago, I wrote about the Japanese government and its announcement of loosened entry restrictions on November 8, 2021. Under the new, more relaxed rules, Japan opened itself to new visa applications for students and technical trainees, who constitute one of the largest pools of foreigners hoping to enter Japan, for the first time in months.

However, just three weeks later, foreigners will yet again be barred from entering Japan as a measure to prevent the spread of the Omicron variant of COVID-19. Prime Minister Kishida announced today (11/29/2021) that this measure, which effectively bans all new entries of foreigners, will come into effect tomorrow, and is expected to remain in place for at least a month. In addition, starting on Wednesday, the daily number of people allowed to enter Japan will be lowered from 5000 to 3500, which will undoubtedly also affect Japanese nationals and foreign residents of Japan hoping to re-enter Japan, Stricter quarantine requirements have also been put in place for those entering from certain countries.

Students who have been hoping to enter Japan for months are certainly finding themselves in a state of limbo yet again. As a college student myself, I have seen many of my peers express frustration over their inability to enter Japan to resume their studies.

While the situation is still very uncertain, we hope that further information about the still-mysterious Omicron variant will lead to a swifter loosening of regulations than last time.

We will be posting any relevant updates that may come up, but in the meantime, do check out our other posts! If you have any questions and require any assistance, feel free to contact IMS.
