Hello from an Intern! (インターン自己紹介)

I’m Anna, one of the IMS summer interns. I’m 19 years old and have just finished my junior year at McGill University. I was born and raised in Portland, Oregon, but moved to Montreal, Quebec to attend school there. My majors are Political Science and East Asian Studies, and my minor is philosophy.

Since my goal after graduation is to go into law, interning here at IMS is for me is both incredibly relevant and exciting. Even though it’s only my second week here, it’s already proven itself to be a learning experience. As far as Japanese goes, this is my first time speaking in a workplace setting so I’m learning a great deal of new phrases. Also,(besides my Canadian study permit) as a dual citizen with zero knowledge of the visa application process, the daily functions of the work that is done here never ceases to surprise me. I never realized how much I took the ease of coming in and going out of America for granted! I know that over the next two months, I have much to learn in terms of both language and the content of this office.

Outside of the usual translation and daily work, we also get to do a great deal of other things as part of our interning experience. Last week we had a welcome party to celebrate our entry into the office, and this week we’ve visited both Tokyo University and a Tokyo courthouse. Being merely an intern, I wasn’t expecting to be welcomed with such kindness, but I’m looking forward to the rest of the summer and for all that this IMS internship holds.
