Proposed fee increase for US exchange visas

On July 17, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security proposed a new rule that would increase the SEVIS fee for F, M, and J visas. SEVIS stands for the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System and registration in this database is mandatory for F, M, and J visa holders.

Under the new rule, the SEVIS registration fee would increase as follows:

  • F, M visas: $200 → $350
  • J visas: $180 → $220

The SEVIS fee for Au Pair, Camp Counselors, and Summer Work/Travel J visa categories will remain unchanged at $35.

The proposed rule is currently in the comment phase, where the public can submit their thoughts and opinions on the rule until September 17, 2018. After this date, the rule will undergo a regulatory review to be either adopted or rejected.
