Applying for the renewal of a permanent resident’s residence card

Permanent residency is a status that is sought by many foreign nationals who are mid-to-long term residents of Japan. There is no limit to the period of stay of a permanent resident. However, please keep in mind that there is an expiration date to the validity of a residency card. Even after obtaining the status of “permanent resident”, it is important to remember to go through necessary procedures to renew the period of validity of your card every 7 years.

Q. When should I apply for the renewal of my residence card?

A. Applications can be made beginning from two months before the expiration date of the card. If the expiration date is on the date of your 16th birthday, it is possible to apply beginning from six months prior to the date of expiration.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Immigration Services Agency has implemented special measures that will allow individuals of whose residence cards expire in March, April, May, June, or July (including the day of expiration) to apply/notify up to three months after the expiration date to reduce congestion at the counter.
